Halloween is coming. As the holiday gets closer, it becomes time to start thinking about holiday treats. So, what are the most popular Halloween treats today?

Popcorn Balls

A traditional, and still fun, holiday treat is the popcorn ball. One of the great things you can do with popcorn balls is to use different colored gelatin, which will change the color of the popcorn ball. Having orange popcorn balls at your next Halloween get-together can be a great way to treat your friends.

Cupcakes

The awesome thing about cupcakes, other than the delicious taste, of course, is the stylizing you can do with them. You can find Halloween cupcake recipes online that have ingredients like pumpkin or apple. These will add a great flavor to your party. You can also find sugar candies in the form of ghosts, goblins, and princesses to put on your cupcakes.

Snack Size Candy Bars

You can’t go wrong with a variety of snack size chocolate bars. Many times, you can get these in variety packs so that you have something for everyone. Around Halloween you can find these at almost any grocery store.

Apples

Have you ever gone diving for an apple? Or eaten a caramel apple on a stick? These are both great Halloween traditions. Apples in all forms are popular during the autumn, however caramel apples are one of the most popular ways to treat guests.

There are so many treats available during Halloween. You may feel a little overwhelmed by your options, especially when hosting a party. However, you can’t go wrong with the classics.

Let’s face it, most people love to eat. Not only does eating give us energy, bring us together with friends and family, and provide us with thirty minutes to an hour off from work every day, but it also tastes great.

Unfortunately there’s a downside, too. Generally, the more we eat the more mass we accumulate and the heavier we get. Countless individuals are consumed by the joy of eating and as a result these people continue being overweight.

Yet what they don’t realize is that there are several options available that will allow them to keep eating delicious foods while simultaneously losing weight.

For starters, drink more water. Having a constant supply of water in your body will decrease your overall hunger because water is a substance that contains no calories and thus it will essentially fill you up without filling you up.

Along the same lines, there are certain pills you can take to help reduce your appetite. You can track down these pills from local health food stores or you can order them online, such as from a UK based Reductil company.

Another option is to consider using a weight loss supplement. Explore the options available to find the right one for your weight loss goals. Once you find a trustworthy xenical supplier, you can continue eating your favorite lunch or dinner foods while also taking weight loss pills.

In addition to drinking more water, you can eat your way to weight loss by having several small meals throughout the day, rather than one or two large meals. Eating a greater number of smaller meals acts to boost your body’s metabolism and thus will help you burn away excess calories.

Eating right is an important part of everyones lives. This means that the diets, what is included in them, and how they are can result in either a healthy person, or a person that will suffer from illness. Some of the best ways to enjoy food, and a good diet, is to prepare food for yourself. One of the largest causes of obesity is fast food, and many Americans suffer from obesity everyday.

Cooking for Life

Some of the best foods can come right out of your own kitchen. Preparing healthy snacks, and taking the time to plan will come in handy for those times that require a quick bite. If you are determined to stay healthy and be smart, then take a look at the food pyramid. This is a great way to see what you need to eat, and how much you should eat.

For those that are trying to get their diet back on track, consider watching cooking shows. There are so many healthy and tasty ideas out there that can really be life changing. Some of them include things like what types of cooking oils to use for most flavor and best health benefits. The other might provide ideas for diet restrictions for those that need bland diets, or have diabetes.

Staying healthy is not a chore, it is a choice. Making the choice to take care of yourself if key for anyone. Next time you get a craving for something high in fat, and that you know is bad for you, consider an apple, and then plan for the next time.

Culinary arts.

Ahhh……the magic of superb chefs working with delectable recipes; each chef creating meals displayed in beautiful dishes, and made especially for the gourmet palate.

Is your mouth watering yet?

George Bernard Shaw once said: “There is no love sincerer than the love of food.” There has never been a truer statement.

Think about it. People seldom lie about what foods they love- or hate; it is one of the areas that you can really know about someone. If you are cooking for friends and one of them hates fish or loves sour cream, you will know immediately.

The real trick to outstanding culinary achievement is the combination of great cooking with great nutrition.

So how, exactly, can this be achieved? Most of us do not attend a culinary school or receive degrees as nutritionists.

The first thing to do is to become proficient in the culinary arts. This is done, believe it or not, by cooking. Learn to cook; learn what different ingredients are for and what they add to a recipe. Hang out with family and friends and learn what they do; everyone has something to teach you. Down through the ages, cooking was a passed-down art; it is still the best way to learn the basics, and the frills, of great cuisine.

And learn about nutrition.

In this day of the Internet, every nutritional fact about foods is literally at your fingertips, Read all you can; experiment with great recipes and nutritional facts.

Dare to make a mistake; this is the way to becoming a satisfactory cook, or even a great one.

Your friends and family will love you!

Image via Wikipedia

Perhaps you’ve tried the popular diet programs such as Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, and the Atkins Diet. However, none of them have worked as well as you’d hoped. One way to improve your eating habits is to trade processed foods for organic and natural options.

When you visit a restaurant, take note of natural food choices. When it comes to menu printing, most establishments flag or make special notations by low-fat, organic and natural entrees. So, here are a few “trades” you can make at home and in restaurants that will improve your health and gradually help you lose the pounds.

Trade traditional peanut butter for natural peanut butter. While the fat content is comparable between the two, you’ll consume less sugar with the natural product. The taste is different so it may take some time to adjust. However, this high protein snack is better for your waistline without the added sugar.

Choose sea salt instead of table salt. While the two types of salt are basically the same at the chemical level, sea salt has a stronger taste. That means you’re likely to use less salt. Ask servers in restaurants if the chef can prepare your food with sea salt. You may not even reach for the table salt when your meal arrives.

Ditch standard potato chips for organic chips or dried fruits. Typically, organic snacks come in smaller portions, making it easier to control how much you eat in one sitting. You can also dry organic fruit and vegetables to create chip-like snacks. Another bonus is that most organic chips don’t have trans-fats or other unhealthy additives.

Most people when they hear that a particular food is processed automatically think it is not a healthy option for you. Not all processed foods you consume are an unhealthy option. Some processed foods are healthy for you. You might be wondering what are the healthy options of processed food. The following are considered to be healthy options of processed food.

Milk is a healthy processed food. It is processed to kill the bacteria and to maintain the fats from separating. Vegetables you find in the grocery store that are frozen are also considered to be a healthy processed food option. By freezing the vegetables it maintains the minerals and nutrients in the vegetable. Any kind of fruit or vegetable juice is yet another source of a healthy processed food.

It is imperative to look at the list of ingredients in the foods you eat if you are trying to avoid processed foods. Visit canada 411 for more information. Most processed foods contain high amounts of sugar, sodium, and fats. If you are trying to eat healthier or even on a diet keep in mind that the following are things you want to avoid: cookies, candies, cereal with sugar, frozen dinners, or box made dinners, or any foods that are high in saturated fats. Most spend their budget for groceries on processed foods. Is it a healthy option? The answer will always be no.

Weaning yourself off of these types of food can and will take some time as well as some getting used to. You will eventually loose the cravings for sweets or salty foods.

You have no doubt heard about green tea and the various health benefits you will get from drinking it. There is another tea out there with just as many benefits known as white tea, and no, this is not referring to black tea with a splash of milk.

White tea comes from the plant Camellia sinensis. This is the same plant from which green tea and black tea is made. The difference between the three is that for white tea, the leaves are dried naturally with sunlight or with air. The processing of white tea leaves involves the most minimal amount of oxidation. This gives white tea a very high amount of health benefits.

White tea is said to contain very high levels of a compound called catechins. This compound has been found by scientists to reduce the risk of many things such as heart attacks, strokes, cancer and diabetes. This is due to its ability to reduce carcinogens in the body. It was found by researchers at Oregon State University that white tea was more effective than green tea at inhibiting cancer causing mutations in the human body.

Other studies have shown that white tea can help to lower blood pressure, which will further help to prevent stroke. Catechins have been found to lower bad cholesterol levels whilst increasing good cholesterol levels. By lowering blood pressure and cholesterol, white tea consequently helps to serve the whole circulatory system. Green tea helps to protect these things also, however the levels of polyphenols present are higher in white tea, and thus they have a greater effect.

Have a cup of tea today!

Just when you thought a common food you’d find in your local grocery store would never make this list of World’s Best Cheeses, you come across this one: cheddar. But not just any cheddar. No, no. This is a special kind of cheddar. England, land of good ol’ Big Ben, holds the honor of this dairy dynamic weapon….

English Farmhouse Cheddar.

Now keep this in mind: it’s not the same as your everyday sharp cheddar by the produce section. It’s not even placed in the organics aisle. True farmhouse cheddar not only has that meaty and salty taste typical of cheddar cheese, but also a faint smoky sulphur note–as if it had been baked in an oven or a grill. This cheddar leaves all other kinds behind. Don’t knock such high-quality cheddars from Vermont creameries, though; but believe it or not, the English Farmhouse Cheddar still kills the competition even from Vermont, no contest.

Think of it as the big muscle of cheeses, brawny and veiny as if it had spent hours at the gym and took protein supplements. In slices, add it to a turkey sandwich for that kick. Or you can even get a tuna melt going and feel the richness warm your throat, or the wholesomeness of a grilled cheese sandwich. Nothing says yum like that. You can’t get a bigger, bolder, braver taste out of a real homestyle, made-with-blood-sweat-and-tears cheddar. If you happen to be in the country of England, head over to Keen’s or Neal’s Yard. That’s the World’s Best right there.

Many have heard of the grocery staple in the lunchmeat section known as “Swiss cheese.” Too bad there are too many holes in that style of cheese, though–and not just literally.

The reason why is you’re missing out so much on some of the best Switzerland has to offer. Yes, Swiss cheese has a place on every sandwich, but if you want the very best of the best, culinary masterpieces–if you want the World’s Best!–ultimately your Switzerland cheese champion is none other than Gruyère!

Most people have heard of that brand of cheese; and most people would guess that it’s from Switzerland. Undoubtedly, Gruyère hails as one of the more well known exotic cheeses in the world. And rightly so, because the quality is such that it deserves every bit of praise it gets. Its firm yet soft texture is matched by the intensity you’d expect from a dry cheese, like cheddar. It’s not all bite and saltiness, though; if you know your cheeses, you’ll get a nutty, fruity, and even buttery taste. A rarity in good food, this cheese can actually get better with age, sort of like wine.

Heading over the country of romance, certainly cheese has its place, especially when paired with wine. And everyone knows wine holds a certain romantic flair! There’s a World’s Best for you in France, and it just so happens to be probably the oldest cheese known to man, a veritable feast given to Charlemagne at one time! The remarkable French cheese is known as Roquefort!

Such an homage to French taste! Probably one of the best blue cheeses you’d ever sink your teeth in, you’d notice right away the olfactory and ominous flavor. Why ominous? The omen is simply that you’re tasting the most masterful in sheep’s milk cheese with a richness like that of custard, and a gamey and saltiness that hits the balance perfectly. It almost stands as its own dessert! The cheese mold that’s characteristic of Roquefort fills your mouth better than any other blue cheese on the market, even the ones that state on the packaging that they in fact are Roquefort! No, they’re not. You want the true original? Head to France. Like visiting Mom and Pop places anywhere you go, you end up finding some of the best gems in culinary couture–the greatest Roqueforts, you’ll find among French culinary masterminds like Coulet, Papillon, and Carles. Take your pick! That’s how impressive France’s resume is when it comes to their dairy dynamics. It wouldn’t be hard at all to find some of that flavor explosion you’d expect from a truly good Roquefort cheese.

Be like Charlemagne if you like some of that Roquefort. Dine on the cheese dish as if your life depended on it.

Continuing with the celebration of cheese all over the world, you can’t miss Italy on that one. In many ways, the country could be considered the King of Cheese. You have all sorts over there–Gorgonzola, Romano, Asiago. They’re all unique and top of the line when it comes to cheese, but make no mistake knowing that there can be only one World’s Best in Italy. And here it is….

Parmesan cheese.

Better known among foodies and culinary experts and chefs as Parmigiano Reggiano, this cheese can be found grated, shredded, sliced, cubed, cut, and sprinkled. You’ll find it on bread, pasta, even certain desserts! Its main strength is the versatility. Even the process of making Parmesan cheese is a remarkable feat of ingenuity. Flavor fills the whole gamut of possibilities, too: fruity, nutty, buttery. Parmesan also has this uncanny ability to make your mouth water no matter how it comes to you. Believe it or not, it’s the third known condiment next to salt and pepper–it’s that well known, that cost efficient, that easy to use. There’s nothing sophisticated about it, and yet its taste and uses rival sophistication itself. Eat it alone as a tasty little snack, or grate it onto any dish–steak, chicken, pork, pasta, rice, even soup. You could even use grated or shredded Parmesan on all kinds of salads from your traditional green to hearty taco. And that’s crazy enough, because that crosses over from Italian food to Mexican food! Crazy, right?

That’s the splendor that is Parmigiano Reggiano, better known as “Parmesan,” the self-proclaimed King of Cheese, rivaling all other Italian cheeses you could possibly name. For sure, even during a time of the apocalypse, you’ll see Parmesan cheese still being eaten by many happy individuals.

It’s overwhelming to even think of the staggering number of cheeses available all over the world, not to mention the fact that every single cheese known to humanity is without a doubt unique in quality. There are the top cheeses, though, beating out all other kinds; for the time being, however, let’s focus on the United States of America: namely a type of goat cheese called “Lake’s Edge,” made famous by a place known as Blue Ledge Farm in Salisbury, Vermont.

Clearly the top of the line, at least among Americans, Lake’s Edge is your classic goat cheese, only done American style. What separates it from other goat cheeses is the inclusion of an earthy, veggie type taste. It has the common tart and milky flavors of regular goat cheese as well, but the added taste really rounds it out and puts Lake’s Edge way above the rest. Many like their traditional cheddars–colby jack, sharp cheddar, mild cheddar, what have you–but all in all the very best in flavor as well as versatility would be this tremendous goat cheese.

Now know this: plenty of other countries share their own types of cheese, all with certain qualities that fit all types of culinary cultures. That’s why there’s a line of “World’s Best,” for sure. Lake’s Edge is only the start of it. You’ll see many others that stand above the rest, so stay tuned. Some of the best cheeses you’ll ever read about (and then hopefully taste, and maybe a little wine to go with it!) will be here for your literary pleasure. The hope is that you can visualize the perfection that is one of our best, most luxurious–yet classic and practical–foods to eat. Simply put, cheese!

Probably one of the best culinary inventions known to man, the concept of the ‘sandwich’ has always brought many smiles to faces all over the world, especially given its versatility. You can basically do any kind of combination you want with a sandwich!–ham, turkey, salami, pastrami, chicken, roast beef, BLT, cheese, peanut butter and jelly, egg salad, chicken salad, potato salad, tuna, tuna salad, seafood salad, everything. There’s nothing a sandwich can’t provide.

But be careful. A sandwich can pack on the pounds like you wouldn’t believe if you’re not mindful of what you make. First off, stay away from certain specialty breads that can add extra pounds to your belly–such as a herbs-and-spices baked bread, or something with added cheese to it. Stick to a honey wheat or cracked wheat bread. Secondly, go simple with the cheese and lighten up on the mayo. Typical healthy choices would be a good Swiss or maybe even a mild cheddar slice; and instead of mayo, go for a honey dijon mustard or fat-free miracle whip. Make sure you load up on the veggies, too–they’re never a bad thing on a sandwich. Easy on things like bacon and even a seafood sensation mixture, which usually calls for adding mayo or some other fattened type of sauce. Lastly, not so much meat, please!–getting slices of salami with the turkey and the ham might sound good, but on your tummy it doesn’t feel good. Be a purist and go for one type of meat, and not so many slices. Save some for another sandwich on another day.

The key is moderation. You can have a healthy sandwich if you don’t overdo it. Think of it this way–when it already tastes good, you don’t need it to taste ‘better’!

Put aside your salt and pepper shaker and especially your seasoned salt container, because you better believe there’s something better out there when it comes to seasoning your food. First off, know that a regular helping of that salt and pepper could be detrimental to your health, not to mention seasoned salt impacts it on a multiplication table by two or three! Generally not a healthy way to season your meals, although in careful moderation it’s convenient. There’s a better way to get great flavor with in fact some great health benefits; it’s called the Herbs de Provence.

Think of France’s sunlit Provence region with the lovely light and freshness of food, and you’ve got Herbs de Provence, a beautiful blend of five or six herbs typically known in French cooking. The usual suspects in the blend of herbs would be thyme, basil, savory, fennel, marjoram, rosemary, or lavender. Generally, when you purchase a container of Herbs de Provence, you’re already getting a balance of several of these herbs for an excellent combination of taste ranging from savory to sweet. Call it a marriage, if you will–a marriage of culinary beauty!

You can use Herbs de Provence in just about anything in any way you like–grilled food, baked food, sauteed food, fried food, meats, soups, vegetables, dairy products, sauces, marinades, rubs, pastes. You name it, Herbs de Provence can do it. Part of the reason why is how it encompasses all kinds of flavors without convoluting it all. It marries sweet and savory, even spicy and mild. Everything you taste is unique and not drowned in a needless mess of indecision.

That’s why it’s a staple in anyone’s herb and spice cabinet. Very easily the go-to seasoning, Herbs de Provence brings the best out of any dish you make. So serve it up! And forget about the salt and pepper and ketchup stuff.

Strap on the apron, grab the tongs, because it’s grilling time! Truly one of the best ways to cook, there’s a health benefit toward it, one that you might not expect. Sauteing is fine, especially when you use healthy oils, such as olive oil. Baking’s great. Even when you fry certain foods, they’re not going to kill your arteries. But without a doubt, getting the grill going gives you unique flavors as well as natural fat release of your meats. Best of all? You don’t just grill meat–you can grill veggies, fruits, and even bread!

To take advantage of the grill, utilize marinades, oils, pastes, rubs, or sauces. Coating your meat or even your veggies is crucial to getting the yummy taste. In addition, grilling wood chips gives off the smoky flavor we all love from the barbecue–such as hickory or cedar. Because the cooking is done over a fire, it intensifies the flavor of whatever sauce or rub you use while draining all the fat off the food for optimal health. In addition to a marinade or such other topping to the meat or veggie, don’t be afraid to sprinkle some added herbs and spices. The fire on the grill will set those herbs and spices deep into the meat and complement whatever sauce you use. It’s important once you’ve set the meat on the grill and properly seasoned it to keep the top closed for the appropriate amount of time. When it’s time to flip the meat, open and flip and then close the grill right back. The aroma needs to sit inside the grill as long as possible for the best taste you can imagine. Once done grilling and the meat or veggies are sufficiently cooked through, remove from the grill and let the food sit for awhile. In culinary terms, it’s called ‘letting the food rest.’ The reason why is to allow those natural flavors to blossom; the cool air brings them out for you.

Voila! You’ve got tremendously grilled food–healthy, yummy, and wholesome. Just remember to get the picnic table ready.

Step into any health food store, and you might drop at some of the prices, especially when you focus on organics. That’s the state of things in the food industry, though; if you want healthy food, you generally pay more money for it. Usually the extremely cheap and convenient foods pack an unhealthy punch.

It’s understandable, though: money can get tight. You most of the time don’t have a choice but to pay for the cheaper junk foods to fill up your tummy. But have no fear–you have some healthy foods for under a dollar to focus on. Starting with….

Apples

Great for just about anything–from salads to snacks–the all-purpose apple with its 117 calories, 5 grams fiber, 17% Daily Value for vitamin C, and 7% Daily Value for potassium, is a winner, especially when you can get one large apple for about a dollar! Get seven for seven bucks, and you’re set for the week.

Bananas

Equally convenient in price and nutrition: you’re looking at only 45 cents per serving (which is one banana), and you can’t miss on your health needs when you’re looking at a respectable 121 calories, 3.5 grams fiber, 14% Daily Value for potassium (487 mg), 20% Daily Value for vitamin C. Just remember to eat them and not forget about them, because those bananas sure go bad pretty fast.

Bag of Baby Carrots

Head over to the vegetable part of produce, and you’ll notice those little bags of cute carrots. This will blow your mind: the impact on your wallet is a simple 19 cents per serving, for about 8 servings per bag! That’s cheap. But you don’t lose out on the nourishment as baby carrots provide 27 calories, 2 grams of fiber, 200% Daily Value for vitamin A, and 7% Daily Value for vitamin C per serving.

Those are just three healthy foods you can buy without hurting your income. There are more out there! Do your research, save your money, and benefit your body.

Many might not have heard about quinoa, but that’s okay. The truth is you’d need one heck of a history lesson to know about it. Think Inca, pre-Columbian Andean civilizations, that sort of thing. This is the amazing thing, though: this ‘superfood’ called ‘quinoa’ can be described as one of the most powerful foods to eat in the world. Why? It’s simple.

There’s a reason why they call it a ‘superfood,’ or better known ‘mother of all grains’ or even the term ‘super-grain’: quinoa seeds are loaded with the essential amino acids necessary for the building blocks of our body to be established, more importantly known as protein. Dietary fiber and phosphorus are also tremendous benefits; quinoa also packs a powerful magnesium and iron punch. Even better still, you’re looking at a gluten-free food, which makes it easily digestible.

The benefits are especially clear when learning of its Inca heritage, hailed as a sacred crop. It was the primary source of nourishment next to corn until the European conquest of South America changed everything, forcing the Incas to instead grow wheat as a primary crop. Spanish colonists frowned upon the use of quinoa, for some odd reason.

Definitely odd given the benefits, especially when you consider that NASA’s Controlled Ecological Life Support System has enlisted quinoa as a leading food source!

While the quinoa seeds look sort of funny, don’t be fooled–when cooked, the nutty flavor and light fluffiness makes for a great alternative to rice or even couscous (another super-grain). Typically in a sold grocery box of prepared quinoa, the natural saponins surrounding each seed are already removed, leaving you the simple task of boiling the seeds in water, or even in milk. They’re versatile enough for all kinds of herbs and spices, can be used as a hot or cold breakfast food, and works well with all kinds of small vegetables and meats.

Without a doubt, quinoa is an all-purpose power source of nutrient phenomenon. Try it in your diet and reap the incredible benefits.
